PUPs

What are they?

PUPs stands for Potentially Unwanted Programs. These are software applications that a user may not want on their computer, even if they are not inherently malicious. They often come bundled with other software and can be installed without the user’s full understanding or consent.

Common characteristics of PUPs:

  • Bundled software: Installed alongside free programs.
  • Adware: Displays unwanted ads or pop-ups.
  • Toolbars or browser hijackers: Modify browser settings, change your homepage or search engine.
  • System slowdowns: Use system resources unnecessarily.
  • Data tracking: Collect user data without clear permission.

Why they are a concern:

While not always harmful like viruses or malware, PUPs can:

  • Compromise privacy
  • Annoy users with ads or pop-ups
  • Degrade system performance
  • Be difficult to uninstall

How to avoid PUPs:

  • Always choose custom installation and deselect extra software.
  • Use reputable antivirus or anti-malware tools that detect PUPs.
  • Download software only from trusted sources.
